2. Get in the pool
At his peak of training, Michael Phelps consumed 8,000 to 10,000 calories a day. That’s four to five times the recommended daily calorie consumption of a typical American. You don’t have to train like an Olympian to get that sort of metabolic effect. Swimming is perhaps the best calorie burn anywhere—a full-body, low-impact workout that revs up the metabolism. If you’re like most people and only learned “survival” swimming as a kid, it’s time to join a master’s swim program and learn to swim properly already. The criteria: If you can’t keep your head down, blow your air out underwater, and swim 100 yards without stopping, it’s time to join a master’s program. Thankfully, they’re inexpensive and available everywhere.
